Hello! And welcome to the Blog of Mass Media Minorities. However you found this site, we’re happy you’re here, and we’re sure you have plenty of questions. For the moment, however, we’ll start by answering the “5 Ws and an H” that you’re surely wondering.
Q.What is Mass Media Minorities?
A. Mass Media Minorities is a non-profit organization that is hoping to change the world by bringing attention to the inequality and injustice brought about by the way the Mass Media portrays Minorities (hence the name).
Q. Who is behind Mass Media Minorities?
A. Mass Media Minorities was founded by Erin Schuhrke, author of Dots, Stripes, and Plaid, a 25 year old University student who couldn’t help notice and be disturbed by the way minorities are portrayed in mass media.
Q. When was Mass Media Minorities founded?
A. The organization was ‘born’ on July 8, 2009.
Q. Where is Mass Media Minorities based & Where can it be contacted?
A. While the organization is technically based in San Marcos, California, where Erin lives, its true home is here, on the internet. As stated before, you can e-mail the organization at massmediaminorities@gmail.com.
Q. Why was Mass Media Minorities created?
A. The short answer is that Mass Media Minorities was created for a school project. But that is just a small factor of the answer. Intolerance and inequality is everywhere, and many people feel that there is nothing to be done to erase it. However, we at MaMeMi believe that all that it takes to change the world is for one person to make their voice heard, because eventually enough people will listen to that voice and work to create change. Minorities are portrayed poorly, even today, in Books, Movies, Television, and other forms of Mass Media. And not only does the unfair portrayal of minorities work to create and reinforce stereotypes, it also affects the self-image of millions of people, every day. By bringing attention to the myriad ways in which the Mass Media inadvertently reinforces these negative images of minorities, this organization hopes to help reduce these negative effects and, eventually, encourage the media to change their ways.
Q.How will Mass Media Minorities do all that and Change The World?
A. MaMeMi is, currently, a blog. In this blog, we will shine light on situations that have come to our attention, through the news, word-of-mouth, or experience. Sometimes we will talk about ways we’ve seen this inequality in the media ourselves, sometimes we’ll tell you about what other people are saying, and sometimes we’ll look at current events.
